Vintage Sewing Machines A large number of people have discovered the benefits of older sewing machines. This site is dedicated to passing on information to make your experience more enjoyable.
Probably half the vintage Necchis I have owned had this problem when I got them. Necchis are victims of their own perfection – tolerances are so tight that even a minor build-up of corrosion that would not affect a lesser machine is enough to freeze a Necchi up tight. The cure to that problem in all my machines has been to lubricate the swivel arm top and bottom and wait overnight to see if the oil has penetrated enough to loosen up the swing arm. Mere oiling will probably not be enough to free up the swivel arm, it might need some help.
First thing to try is heat, preferably from a hair dryer. Heat will cause the parts to expand, hopefully they will expand enough for some of the new oil to work down in where it will do some good.

The company name of Husqvarna comes from the position of the factory alongside the impressive Husqvarna falls where great salmon leap upstream in the spring floods. The Husqvarna Sewing Machine Company can rightly claim to be one of the oldest companies in the world still supplying sewing machines. Because Husqvarna originally was the arms factory to the Swedish Royal Family and was in business centuries before it started making sewing machines.
Early Husqvarna history is sketchy at best and I have travelled the length of Sweden looking for details. I’ll explain the different spellings in a mo. During the ‘s there was a fortress called Rumlaborg near Husqvarna. Records show that by the name Husqvarna was already in use to describe the Mill House hus-house beside the waterfalls known then as Husquernen. Also villages starting with ‘HUS’ often indicated a fortified encampment belonging to the crown.
Even at this early time the mill was run by the nearby Rumlaborg fortress to manufacture weapon parts throwing axes I presume. Rumlaborg was an important stronghold for the Swedish Crown during the Middle Ages and, as it grew, attracted other weapon makers to the area. Its orders to protect and secure trade and travel. The military stronghold needed weapons and other supplies and it appears that many of these were forged locally by craftsmen old Vikings with nothing to do I suppose.

As I wish to purchase some secondhand and I am not sure if they will fit my machine Yes, if you are using discs and feet that have all come from the Elna Tavara SA factory Swiss made then you are in luck, all the feet are interchangeable between the machines not the Contessa though, it was made in Japan.
The Star series and earlier had one piece feet. The Air Electronics went to a heel and detachable sole design but the height and attachment method is the same between them all. So you can purchase the newer heel and clip on soles and use on the older models if you wish. With the Elnagraph discs almost all the single and double discs can be switched between the machines with the Elnagraph. I have discs from Star Series and Air Electronic and use them all.
I think there is one exception with the discs, the very first ones have a deeper or shallower little finger that locks the disc in, I cant quite remember what it was.

Well I finally found a model 29 in Norther Michigan, needs work but seems in pretty good order after the first oiling – up. Here she is looking south over the great Crystal Lake. Only part that is missing completely is the thread tension assembly, I am sure I can make one from spare parts that will look original enough.
Lot’s of grime and goo all over it but that’s just cleaning. I was expecting to find some very loosey goosey parts and operations but she is very tight. Mind you I have never worked on one of these things before; I seem to always need a new challenge. I keep thinking it is a long ways from sewing and I hear they are not easy to run so I am not sure if it will be two weeks or two years before I can say its a reliable runner.
Knowing what every little feature and detail of a sewing machine helps understand the genius of this design. Obviously the goal of the design was two fold:
